Nyerere (Selous) National Park
Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is one of Africa’s largest protected areas and a true gem for those seeking an authentic safari experience. Covering over 30,000 square kilometers, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers vast, unspoiled wilderness with fewer crowds compared to the northern safari circuit.
The park is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife. Visitors can encounter large elephant herds, abundant giraffes, buffalos, wildebeests, and zebras. It’s also a stronghold for predators like lions, leopards, wild dogs, and spotted hyenas. The mighty Rufiji River runs through the park, attracting hippos, crocodiles, and an incredible diversity of birdlife, making it perfect for both game drives and boat safaris.
What sets Nyerere apart is the variety of safari experiences it offers. Beyond classic game drives, guests can enjoy walking safaris with armed rangers and boat trips along the Rufiji, giving a close-up perspective of animals in their natural habitats. The park’s remote and wild character makes it an ideal destination for travelers who want to escape the crowds and explore Tanzania off the beaten path.
Nyerere National Park is best visited between June and October, during the dry season, when wildlife congregates around rivers and waterholes. It’s a destination that combines raw wilderness, thrilling wildlife encounters, and unforgettable scenery.
